                                                Genocide Essay

Genocide is a very specific term referring to violent crimes committed against groups with the intent to destroy the existence of the group.Genocide has happened many times in history. Two examples of genocide include the Holocaust and  the one that happened in Cambodia. In both of these genocides, the victims suffered from many of the same problems. They were dying of malnutrition, overworking, their persecutors used violence to maintain control, and many more.Unfortunately the history with genocide can be repeated and can happen to anyone.

The purpose of Pol Pot’s persecution of the cambodian people was to create a communist peasant farming society also known as an “agrarian utopia”.He was inspired in part by Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution.Alternately, Hitler’s purpose for annihilating the jews was different than Pol Pot’s because when Germany lost world war 1, Hitler blamed the jews for what was happening to Germany. As a result, 2,000,000 cambodians died and 6 million jews died.

The victims in cambodia and the Holocaust were treated similarly by their persecutors. One similarity would be that the victims were dying from malnutrition and overworking. The cambodians were given one tin of rice per person every two days. They also had to work in fields around 4a.m. until 10p.m. and only rested for two periods. If they ate the food in the fields someone would get shot, On the other hand, the jewish people of the holocaust were given very little food like bread, thin soup, and black coffee. They had to dig death holes, unload dead bodies in cattle cars, do work in crematoriums, and had to follow the commands of the nazi soldiers or they would get shot. Therefore, the victims from both Cambodia and the Holocaust died from malnutrition and overworking.

Another similarity between the victims was how their persecutors used violence to maintain control. For the people of Cambodia, the way the persecutors maintained control was that “anyone suspected of disloyalty...was shot or bludgeoned with an ax.” On the other hand, for the jewish people of the Holocaust the way by hanging them, whipping them, and torturing them.In both instances the persecutors used violence maintain control of the victims.

Genocide can be repeated anywhere. It happned during the Holocaust and it recently happened again in cambodia. In the holocaust the jewish people’s rights were slowly taken away, the same with the cambodians. After their rights were taken away they started dying from malnutrition and over-working.The persecutors also used violence to maintain control. These and many more horrible things are reasons why their races both nearly ended.Unfortunately, history  can be repeated.
